The School of Engineering Sciences (SES) at the University of Ghana has embarked on a momentous journey as it celebrates two decades of engineering excellence. The theme for this remarkable milestone is "Engineering, Excellence: Celebrating 20 Years of Innovation, Creativity, and Impact."

A Colourful Commencement

The year-long celebration was inaugurated at a vibrant ceremony held at the Great Hall. Distinguished guests, faculty, staff, students, and industry partners gathered to reflect on the SES's remarkable journey and its significant contributions to society.

Dean's Welcome

Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, the Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, extended a warm welcome to all attendees. She emphasized that the purpose of these celebrations was to examine the SES's achievements over the past two decades and recognize the impact it has made. Grateful for the dedication of faculty, staff, students, and industry collaborators, Professor Kaufmann set the tone for an inspiring commemoration.

Engineering Solutions for the Future

Professor Boateng Onwona-Agyeman, the Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, highlighted the critical role of engineers in addressing daily challenges. From energy storage to food security and waste disposal, engineers play a pivotal role in shaping our world. Professor Agyeman emphasized the need for collaborative efforts and scientific expertise to develop innovative solutions. He called for continued support for institutions like the SES, which are equipped to advance ground-breaking work.

Vice-Chancellor's Message

In a recorded message, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, congratulated the SES on its 20th anniversary. She acknowledged the School's legacy of training knowledgeable engineers and engineering scientists who have demonstrated leadership across various domains. As the University itself celebrates 75 years, Professor Amfo expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to the SES's success.

Young Yet Impactful

Honourable John Ntim Fordjour, Deputy Minister for Education, expressed excitement about participating in the celebration. He commended the SES for being one of the youngest yet most impactful schools at the University of Ghana. Notably, the SES was the first to introduce undergraduate programs in Biomedical Engineering in the subregion. Honourable Fordjour emphasized the alignment of the SES's vision with national goals, particularly in promoting STEM education at the pre-tertiary level.

Founding Dean's Insights

Emeritus Professor Samuel Sefah-Dedeh, the Founding Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, provided a historical perspective. His presentation delved into the background and evolution of the SES, highlighting its pioneering spirit and commitment to excellence.

Outdooring of School Anthem and Logo

As part of the event, the School of Engineering Sciences also officially out doored an anthem and a school logo. These were artifacts created by undergraduate students at the school. The words of the anthem were by Mr Jeffrey Nketia Obrempong and put to song by Dr Amakye Boateng of the Department of Music. Mr John Jeff Abbu Bonsra’s design won the competition organised to select the school logo.

As the SES celebrates its 20th anniversary, it looks forward to shaping the engineering landscape in Ghana and beyond.
