PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
Engineering materials technology has historically been the greatest enabler of technological advancement and continues to make startling changes in human lives in the 21st century. Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary course focusing on the relationship between the structure; processing; properties and application of materials. The department draws on scientific perspectives from chemistry, physics, biology, computational, and mathematical approaches, and engineering, economics, and industrial design. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), a foundation member of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana. The department's research and academic programs address all classes of materials, used in every domain of human endeavor, including energy, sustainability, water and environmental remediation, building and construction, nanotechnology, healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing. The abundant natural resources in Ghana yet to be exploited on commercial scale including clays, bauxite and other natural materials challenges the Department to train materials scientists and engineers with entrepreneurial skills to turn these materials into useful industrial and domestic products.
The BSc Materials Science and Engineering programme is designed to offer a hands-on learning experience with three majoring options in the areas of engineering ceramics technology, extractive and physical metallurgy as well as polymer science and technology, after a common programme in six out of the eight semesters. The specific goals are such that after going through the programme students should have a solid background in the fundamental areas of Materials Science and Engineering (i.e. structure-property relationship, processing, behaviour and performance and characterization).
