PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

Engineering materials technology has historically been the greatest enabler of technological advancement and continues to make startling changes in human lives in the 21st century. Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary course focusing on the relationship between the structure; processing; properties and application of materials. The department draws on scientific perspectives from chemistry, physics, biology, computational, and mathematical approaches, and engineering, economics, and industrial design. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), a foundation member of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana. The department's research and academic programs address all classes of materials, used in every domain of human endeavour, including energy, sustainability, water and environmental remediation, building and construction, nanotechnology, healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing. The abundant natural resources in Ghana yet to be exploited on commercial scale including clays, bauxite and other natural materials challenges the Department to train materials scientists and engineers with entrepreneurial skills to turn these materials into useful industrial and domestic products.

The PhD Materials Science and Engineering program is designed to provide students access to a highly specialized background in Materials Science and Engineering focused on scientific research, technological development and innovation. It also provides students with an advanced graduate education that will prepare them for professional careers as high-level materials scientists and engineers in industry, academia, or the public sector in the areas of  sustainable energy generation and storage, environmental remediation technologies, sustainable building and construction materials, materials for manufacturing,   advanced materials for healthcare and drug delivery.

Module: Regular or Part-Time

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

Food Process Engineering is a scientific multidisciplinary field dealing with the development and refinement of food products for human and animal consumption. As a scientific discipline, Food Process Engineering encompasses the practical application of science to develop efficient industrial production, packaging, storage, and marketing of wholesome and convenient foods. Education in Food Process Engineering includes training in materials science [rheology, mass transfer properties, and thermal and electrical food properties] applied mathematics, quality control, engineering design of food process, and microbiological applications in food processing. Experts in Food Process Engineering work in academia, the public sector and industry with the primary role of assessing the problems concerning food production, food quality, process and plant design and food regulation.

Module: Regular or Part-Time

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The PhD in Agricultural Engineering at the University of Ghana is a multidisciplinary programme that integrates engineering technology with biological sciences to address challenges in agricultural, food, and biological systems. The programme aims to build on theoretical foundations in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering. It emphasizes practical skills in conducting and analysing experiments, designing systems and processes, and solving technical problems. Graduates are prepared to contribute to sustainable agricultural practices, resource conservation, and innovative food processing techniques, ultimately supporting Ghana’s agricultural development and food security.

Module: Regular or Part-Time

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana is a multidisciplinary programme that integrates principles from various engineering fields, such as electrical, mechanical, chemical, and materials engineering, to address healthcare-related challenges. The programme aims to provide students with a solid foundation in both life sciences and engineering, fostering creativity, self-learning, and innovation. It prepares graduates to design and develop medical devices, improve healthcare technologies, and contribute to advancements in medical diagnostics and treatment. The ultimate goal is to produce skilled biomedical engineers who can lead in a rapidly evolving field and positively impact healthcare in Ghana and beyond.

Module: Regular or Part-Time

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

Computer Engineering deals with the process of analysing and designing all hardware, software and operating systems for computer systems. Computer Engineering fuses the disciplines of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering for a more integrative study and application. However the terms Computer Engineering and Computer Science differ in certain aspects. In simplest terms, whereas Computer Science focuses on the software aspect of computers, Computer Engineering looks at the design and build of computer hardware. Computer Engineers thus research, design, develop, test, and oversee the manufacture and installation of computer hardware. This includes computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems, and related equipment such as keyboards, routers and printers.
