Dean’s Welcome Message

Recent News

Welcome to the School of Engineering Sciences at University of Ghana.  The School of Engineering Sciences was established as the Faculty of Engineering Sciences (FES) in the 2003/2004 Academic Year and welcomed its pioneering batch of 31 students, comprising 26 male and 5 females in August 2004. FES attained its current status as the School of Engineering Sciences (SES) when the University adopted the Collegiate System of Governance in 2014.

The original mandate of the School was:

1. to expand the engineering capacity of Ghana’s public universities,

2. to help expand and diversify the University’s curricula,

3. to create more opportunities for the increasing number of science students and

4. to provide human resources in the selected disciplines and emerging areas of Ghana’s economy for research and industrial application.

The five (5) academic programmes selected were truly unique in Africa: Agricultural Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Food Process Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering (Ceramics Option). A second phase, involving an expansion of the Materials Science and Engineering programme to include Metallurgy and Polymer Options and introduction of Aeronautics & Space Science Technology was envisioned.

Over the past couple of decades SES has run the five original undergraduate programmes and extended the programmes on offer to Master’s in Engineering, Master of Philosophy and PhD thus supporting the University’s vision “to become a World Class Research-intensive University”. The School has also done well with regard to research productivity as laboratories have been established with support from the University and through the personal initiatives of several members of the faculty. Regarding teaching, the SES academic programmes are noted for their strong basic and applied science content. Many graduates of both the undergraduate and Masters programmes have successfully transitioned to some of the best graduate schools around the world.  Many other alumni are holding down employment in various sectors of the Ghanaian economy and elsewhere.

SES is in the process of positioning itself as a Powerhouse of Engineering Education.  Faculty, staff and students are working together to create a vibrant community characterized by excellence.  We value and recognise creativity and innovation in all we do. We are actively seeking teaching and research collaborations as well as mutually beneficial industrial partnerships as we pursue our goals.  We offer undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MEng, MPhil and Ph.D.) degree programmes in Agricultural Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Food Process Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering.

We welcome you to learn more about us and to visit us in the School of Engineering Sciences on the beautiful campus of the University of Ghana at Legon.

Sincerely,

Elsie Effah Kaufmann, PhD PE-GhIE DhPMP FBSE FGA
